The #1 Variable In Quick Pop Times

I hope you all are having a great holiday time with family! We are back at it and getting our facility ready to go for January. But in the meantime here's some quality reading to take up some of that extra time you have. :)

As much as you've heard us say blocking and receiving are more important than your pop time; there is some sort of mystical force that draws all of us back to wanting the best pop time out there. And I'm good with that!

You don't get a lot of glory as a catcher but when you throw out a runner anywhere on the base paths, all eyes turn to you and you get the thumbs up. You gotta love that!

At Catching IQ we work a lot on improving our catchers release times. That's a big part of the equation in getting the ball to 2nd quickly. But the #1 difference maker in pop time is throwing velocity.

7 of the top 10 MLB catchers in pop time throw 83 mph or greater to 2nd base. Of the top 30 catchers in pop time only 3 throw below 80 mph! (MLB pop time leaders)

The top 15 catchers had a release time of .75 or quicker and threw at least 80 mph to 2nd base.

We've already got most of our catchers in the .75 range for release time, which is great! That means we've got short, quick, and efficient throwing mechanics and we are getting rid of the ball quickly. The next step in improving pop time is in improving throwing velocity.

Improving throwing velocity isn't accomplished with just a long toss program; while long toss is a great addition to a throwing program, the real key to improving velocity is in weight training.
